Who Has Access to You? Why Your Network Shapes Your Net Worth And Your Mindset.
I always say to anyone who will listen:
“Your network is the sum total of your net worth.”
And I don’t just mean that in terms of money.
I mean it in terms of your mindset and the momentum of your life.
Because the truth is this:
Who you surround yourself with will either sharpen your clarity or cloud your confidence.
They’ll either elevate your energy or drain your drive, and in many ways, they’ll determine how you think, how you act, and how you lead.
It’s easy to think of “networking” as something we do at events, mixers, or even on LinkedIn. But what if we started seeing our network not just as people we know, but as people who grow us?
The Influence Is Subtle, But Significant
Your circle, whether professional, personal, or spiritual, doesn’t just reflect you.
It shapes you.
Every conversation, every shared value, every piece of advice, encouragement, or subtle judgment has an effect. And over time, these effects compound.
As the late Maya Angelou once said:
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
How your network makes you feel directly impacts your sense of self and your capacity to lead.
You Can’t Control Others, But You Can Control Access
Leadership isn’t just about who follows you.
It’s about who influences you.
Sometimes, we unknowingly grant people front-row seats in our lives who should’ve only had standing room in the back.
We give access to those who haven’t earned trust.
We maintain ties out of loyalty, history, or, let’s be honest, guilt… even when their presence stifles our growth.
But one of the most powerful acts of self-leadership is learning to manage access.
As Michelle Obama writes in Becoming:
“Your story is what you have, what you will always have. It is something to own.”
Your story, and the people you allow into it, deserve discernment.
Not everyone is meant to be part of every chapter.
Check the Room: Are You Leading, or Being Led?
The quality of your network impacts the quality of your:
- Decisions
- Mindset
- Follow-through
- Confidence in your own voice
- Opportunities you may seek out
If you find yourself constantly doubting, shrinking, or second-guessing, ask yourself:
Who am I surrounding myself with? Are they mirrors, mentors, or merely placeholders?
Are they calling out the light in you?
Or are they constantly dimming it?
As Oprah Winfrey wisely said:
“Surround yourself only with people who are going to lift you higher.”
That’s not just a feel-good quote.
It’s a mindset strategy.
Build Your Ecosystem With Intention
Whether you’re an emerging leader, a seasoned executive, or somewhere in between, curate your circles with care.
Choose mentors who challenge you.
Friends who refill you.
Collaborators who expand you.
The more intentional you are about who gets access, the more powerful your mindset becomes.
Leadership doesn’t only begin with vision… it starts with alignment.
With values, with the right voices, and with a village you can lean on.
Two Questions to Consider:
Take a moment to reflect on who you’ve allowed into your space, and ask:
Who in my current circle is fueling my growth, and who might be slowing me down?
What boundaries or shifts might be necessary to honour my next level of growth?
And remember this:
You are not only allowed, but expected, to evolve.
And as you do, not everyone can come with you.
Let that be okay.
Choose the company you keep the same way you’re meticulous about your outfit for a social event, professional interview, or date night.
Don’t just level up in your mind.
Set the bar for how you choose your future.
Be bold.
Be unapologetic.
Be intentional.
