The Illusion of Experience: Are You Growing or Just Repeating?

When I first heard Ginny Clarke say that, it stopped me in my tracks.

I paused the podcast, rewound it, and played it again. It wasn’t just a clever line; it was a callout.

Because I’ve seen it on repeat (pun intended).

And I’ve watched far too many women, who are brilliant, more than capable, and those who lead with their heart, unknowingly fall into this trap.

The World Has Shifted — Have You?

As a millennial woman, I’ve literally had a front row seat to the world transforming at breakneck speed.

I’ve seen:

  1. Mobile phones evolve from literal bricks to pocket-sized powerhouses
  2. The rise of the internet from dial-up to digital omnipresence
  3. Search engines grow smarter than some humans (debatable, perhaps)
  4. Vehicles go from combustion to electric to autonomous
  5. And… Artificial Intelligence disrupt every industry imaginable

All of this, and I haven’t even hit 40 yet.

So when people say, “I’ve been doing this for 20 years,” I often wonder:

Have you really grown with the times, or are you still solving today’s problems with yesterday’s mindset?

The Comfort Zone Is a Sneaky Place

In a recent group coaching session, I asked a question that brought the room to silence:

“Is it possible that you may be letting your comfort zone win, because staying in a predictable struggle is easier than seeking unpredictable success?”

There it was.

That quiet sting of truth.

The nods. The eye contact being avoided. The internal realizations.

You see, consistency and reliability are admirable traits. They are the building blocks of discipline and trust.

However, here’s the kicker:

Repetition without reflection leads to stagnation, not success.

Many of us, especially women in leadership, have mastered the art of showing up.

We are dependable. We know our roles. We hit the deadlines.

But are we evolving?

Or, are we just rehearsing the same response patterns, decision-making styles, and comfort-based choices, year after year?

Predictable Struggles vs. Unpredictable Success

Here’s what I’ve come to learn after coaching and observing hundreds of women in leadership:

We can confuse struggle with strength.

We stay in familiar tension, the same draining job, the same dysfunctional team, the same limiting beliefs, because we’ve learned how to “manage” it.

But managing stress is not the same as mastering your growth.


It takes courage to admit:

  • “I’m not stretched. I’m stuck.”
  • “I’m not advancing. I’m accommodating.”
  • “I’m not leading. I’m looping.”

And no matter your industry, education, tech, law, health, or personal development, trying to lead in today’s fast-paced world with a five-year-old mindset is like trying to run an app on a system that hasn’t been updated in a decade.

It will crash. It will glitch. It won’t be sustainable.

You Can’t Lead What You’re Unwilling to Outgrow

If you’re reading this and it’s tugging at something inside you, it’s probably because you know you’re ready for a different kind of leadership.

One that’s not defined by years in the seat, but by your willingness to:

  1. Learn something new
  2. Disrupt your own patterns
  3. Embrace uncomfortable growth
  4. Update your leadership lens
  5. Release predictability in pursuit of purpose

Growth is not always loud. Sometimes it’s the quiet decision to no longer tolerate what you’ve normalized.

So, Let Me Ask You:

Are you evolving?

Or, are you expertly repeating?

Are you growing into a leader of tomorrow?

Or, are you stuck in a loop dressed up as longevity?

Because, sis, let me tell you, your potential doesn’t live in your past patterns.

It lives in your next decision.
